Europe´s new AI-optimised supercomputer

Europe is preparing a major new AI-optimised supercomputer. The LUMI-AI supercomputer will be installed in Kajaani, Finland in 2027. It is designed for next-generation AI workflows involving large datasets, while also supporting large-scale simulations and data-intensive scientific applications. The LUMI AI is expected to deliver around ten times the AI capacity of the current LUMI supercomputer.

LUMI-AI will be located alongside the planned LUMI-IQ quantum computer, creating an environment linking AI, high-performance computing and quantum technologies. It represents a further step toward shared European infrastructure for advanced AI research, innovation and industrial competitiveness.

The system will serve European startups and SMEs, while remaining accessible to the wider research community. Priority application areas already supported by the LUMI AI Factory include manufacturing, health and life sciences, communications technologies, climate research, materials science and language technology.

The total value of the project is EUR 387.8 million. Its funding is shared equally between EuroHPC JU and the LUMI AI Factory consortium involving Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland.
