South Korea identified seven drivers of future growth

It is part of its "Seven Major SEED" (Strategic Emerging Engines for Disruptive Innovation) initiative unveiled on 12 August 2026. It includes seven projects aimed to secure new growth engines for South Korea by focusing on three areas: future clean energy, next-generation frontier technologies and advanced supply chain ecosystem.

It includes:

1. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): Commercial deployment targeted by 2035.
2. Nuclear Fusion: Building a locally developed fusion reactor by 2035 and nuclear fusion power production by late 2030s.
3. Next-Generation Renewable Energy: Projects including advanced solar cells and offshore wind technologies, hydrogen production systems and developing AI-based power-grid technologies.
4. Next-Generation Frontier Quantum Technology: Developing a domestic 100-qubit quantum processing unit by 2029 and becoming a global leader in quantum chip manufacturing in 10 years
5. Space and Aviation: Targeting an uncrewed, private-sector-led lunar landing mission by 2030 and the development of an independent low-orbit satellite communication network by 2035.
6. Advanced Biotechnology: Expanding AI-bio infrastructure by 2030 and brain-computer interface products by 2035.
7. Advanced Supply Chains for Critical Minerals and Materials: Securing stable supply chains, components, and equipment infrastructure by enhanced recycling and investing > 7 bn USD in R&D over the next 5 years.
